Flying Bananas

Colorful fruit and vegetable market in Old Jeddah

Old Jeddah is home to the historic Bab Makkah marketplace, one of the oldest shopping areas of the city.  As old as this area is, it still thrives with hundreds of small shops and souks and bargains to be had.  Many people still live in the outdated and rundown buildings in this community.  I love this photo of a typical produce shop.  The woman, who is seated and appears to be drinking a cup of tea, is not dressed in the usual black abaya, which in and of itself is quite unusual.  She is likely from somewhere in Africa and wears her own traditional dress.  The bananas are hung from the ceiling and appear to be flying or floating!

I like flying bananas 🙂 That lady is Somali not Sudanese and a lot of Somali people immigrate to Yemen and sometimes Saudi if they get lucky.

Sudanese women would often wear thier local outfit instead of having a full length hijab.

Another great photo. Wish we had produce like that here.

    Dear Susie,

This photo remembers me of my days in Yemen last year. It was a touristic trip and I had made a similar picture in the market place in San’aa. The pink dressed woman seems like from Sudan. In Yemen, I had met many women from Muslim African countries who had come to San’aa to work.

    Friendly greetings from Istanbul,

    Müge

African textiles are so amazing, and she just adds to the wildly colorful (and fanciful?) scene.

I adore this photo! You know, though, that I have a real soft spot for photos of vegetable markets!

  6. Beautiful photo! The colors and composition are really lovely. And those flying bananas are amazing! We don’t have those here. 😉
