Yes, We Have it in Every Color!

Salesmen at the ready.

Salesmen at the ready.

Another old shopping area in Old Jeddah is called Hindawiyya, which is known for the availability of everything you could possibly need for sewing, crafts, or beading.  A maze of hundreds of little shops in this section of town bustles with activity, connected by tunnel-like alleyways.  The selection is overwhelming.  Some shops specialize more in sewing needs, like fabrics, trims, buttons, threads, sequins, feathers, and scissors.  Other shops offer crystals, glassor plastic beads, and jewelry findings.  I’ve noticed that most businesses here seem to be over-staffed, likely due to cheap foreign labor.  These chaps were all identically clad, and they all smiled at me AFTER I took the photo.

Really lovely photo. So nice the way they pose as well. Not one turns away of refuses to be photographed. Lovely colors.

  2. Your comment about the smiles made me chuckle. I’ve seen this before where some men feel they need to look serious when photographed in conjuction with work. I also liked Elaine’s comment above about how they are so evenly spaced behind that counter, just waiting for some serious business to occur.

    Hello Susie,

I’m writing you from Istanbul / Turkey. I’ve discovered your site on Skywatch Friday blogroll. Your story is very interesting and it proves how much you love your husband because not every woman can accept to move to a country with a different culture. I wish you very nice days in Jeddah.

    Best regards,

    Müge

Maybe it’s a dignity thing. I like how evenly spaced they are – each with his area of responsibility?
