Behind the Villa Gates

Behind the villa gates...
Behind the villa gates…

Private detached residences here in Jeddah are called villas.  The Saudis highly value their privacy, and security of the women is a concern.  All villas are surrounded by at least 8 foot walls and are accessible only by gates.  Many villa owners employ caretakers.  I always wonder what’s behind those many gates as we drive by and I happened to catch this set of gates open.  Every surface of the home, the walls, and the inner courtyard is completely tiled.  Tile is much more durable to withstand the brutal climate here.  The landscaping is a nice touch.

Susie: That looks like such a neat abode, did you want to check it out inside the gate?

I used to look inside every time I saw an open gate, which wasn’t very often. Those villas were fascinating, and beautiful. Eventually, I got invitations to enough of them to satisfy my curiosity.

The villa in this picture looks like it houses a wealthy family.

It looks like a hotel. I suppose it houses extended family members and household help, perhaps like the gentry of Jane Austen’s England.
