This businessman’s office space consists of an old desk and a chair which sit out in the open air at the big outdoor fruit and vegetable market in Jeddah. He’s got a calculator, a pencil and some paperwork and not much more to keep track of his business dealings selling fresh vegetables. I would think many other small businesses here operate pretty much the same way.
About This Blog, and About Me: Susie of Arabia
Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, is KSA's 2nd largest city and is located on its west coast, right on the Red Sea. I moved here in 2007 with my Saudi hubby. This journal reflects the things that I see here, life through my eyes, my lens.
Please be sure to also visit my other blog, SUSIE OF ARABIA (formerly SUSIE'S BIG ADVENTURE), which relates my experiences, thoughts, and observations about living in Saudi Arabia.

i’m glad i found your site – it is very nice
O.M.G. I love it! Freedom from computers, faxes, telephones, cables. Not to mention the mountains of papers which need to be filed . . . but there is no more room for filing cabinets & in all honesty really no filing system to find all those papers ever again should the need arise. & Marahm is right . . . he’s there to answer the question. I just hate that voice mail: “Your call is important to us.” Or, getting the receptionist & stating: “It’s an emergency. I must talk to a HUMAN BEING!” Then I get sent to yet another voice mail box: “I’m away from my desk right now . . . blah, blah, blah.” There’s something to be said for simplicity. I bet this guy gets just so much more done & he can actually answer questions about his stock. And he goes home to his very private wife & family WITHOUT a Blackberry to bother him with professional e-mails.
Is it a whole-sale market? I’ve seen the distribution market in UAE once, and I’ve seen the whole sellers in Russia sell their fruits and veggies right from the back of their 18-wheeler. I like the fact that this particular picture defuses the whole Arabs are rich idea
Farmer’s Market approach to distribution, come and get it.
One of the attractive features of living in the Kingdom is that you can get easy access to any number of businesses. This man’s desk in the middle of his inventory could not have been made more efficient!
Anyone who needs to speak to him does not need to press seven buttons in respnse to a recorded message, or walk up three flights of stairs and turn left, then right, then left again to find his office!
