SkyWatch: UFO Sighting

dscf3694-1-copy
I’ve driven by this structure many times and couldn’t really figure out was it was. Well, the mystery has finally been solved. I recently learned that this structure was begun several years ago – as a private residence. But apparently it has become an abandoned project, for whatever reason. It really does resemble some sort of spaceship and although it’s hard to tell, the angled sides actually stick out above and beyond the wall in front of it. What’s even more remarkable is its location. The plot of land it sits on is in a very ritzy area of the city amidst palaces and amazing villas. Perhaps the influential neighbors complained, causing the project to come to a screeching halt?

  4. Basmo says:

yeah the wife story is correct a prince built it for his wife aljohara (diamond) but after getting divorced the building was not completed and abandoned for some reason

  5. Oz Girl says:

Quite the interesting photo and structure… can’t say it looks like a very warm and cozy, inviting home if it were to be finished, so perhaps better abandoned! 🙂

  6. Fishing Guy says:

Susie: Maybe the aliens took the people away before completion, I’ve been told it happens!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. fruitfulfusion says:

I had my first “sighting” of this one in 1989 and we’ve been wondering what the story was ever since!

  8. Arija says:

Interesting indeed. may be just the contents of the money bags dried up.

  9. Susie you really do have some incredible architecture as well as sculpture!

  10. Hossam says:

This really has been there for a long time. I remember passing this all the time when I was growing up in Jeddah–back in the mid ’90s! Well, after an 11-year absence, I’m coming back. Hope they finish this one in my lifetime.

  11. That is a very unique building to have been planned as a home. It looks like it would fit right in with all the public art you have shown us.

  12. Erin says:

a good friday to you…interesting capture and good tracking down info about it…yes it does resemble a spaceship…reminds me of a hotel/motel in san francisco that we went to in the 70s when i was a kid…lol.
    have a great weekend.

  13. I like the photo of the “spaceship” framed by the swaying palm trees. Very zen like.

    I still think it’s a space ship.

  17. Geogypsy says:

Maybe somebody started to build a space ship. I sort of like the design.

  18. sylvia says:

Yes, it is another of Susie’s wonderful stories! And an interesting one, would be fun to find out the whole story behind it. And it would be interessting to learn what finally happens to it. Always a great post! Thanks!

  19. Jacob says:

Another of Susie’s wonderful stories! Too bad that this never got finished…it would be fun to see what it would have looked like in its final incarnation. Wonder what will happen to it.

Maybe they should make it into a children’s playground. Boys on one side and girls on the other side hidden by a curtain.

  20. diana says:

There are many urban legends about this, the most popular one (and Jeddahwis’ favorite) being that it was built for a man’s lovely fiance named Jauharah (diamond), hence the shape. There were some complications in building, and so it was stopped.

For those of us who grew up seeing this structure, we still believe what we were told: that it IS in fact a spaceship that landed in Jeddah. Where are the aliens? Well. They could be anyone you know or have met in the city. ;D

  21. J Bar says:

Very interesting building. Shame that it was abandoned.
