Colorful Hookah Pipes

These colorful glass hookah water pipes sit in the window of a small shop that sells everything one needs to smoke “Hubbly Bubbly” at home, from the aromatic fruity flavored moist tobaccos, to the fancy velvet hoses and wooden mouthpieces. Also called Sheesha here in Saudi Arabia, hookah pipes are wildly popular. There are hookah shops almost on every block! Many restaurants have areas where both men and women can enjoy smoking hookahs. Several that I’ve been to offer outdoor lounge areas to accommodate these smokers. I have tried it myself and it makes me feel light headed and nauseous!

Bill–so you don’t think the caterpillar in Alice in Wonderland was smoking apple-flavored tobacco? 🙂

They have all but vanished from here. Then again, it’s what people used to put in them that caused their disappearance.

I tried a hookah once. You can get ’em here in pretty much any Middle Eastern restaurant (my favourite is this one Lebanese restaurant). The only thing is, they fall under the ‘no-smoking in public places’ law here in my city and so there is no real tobacco in these things. So yeah, you smoke flavoured…nothing? What I had tasted like green apple with a burnt aftertaste. Kind of takes the point out of it all, even if I don’t smoke anyway :/

oooh! these are beautiful! Great shot!

Yes, they are really smoking tobacco! All sorts of flavors–although the customs officials did not believe that when my dh tried to bring an antique brass one back into the states. I don’t recommend it!
And smoking tobacco through one of these is horrible for your health–like an entire pack in a hit! Because the water cools the smoke there is a complete myth that it is not as harmful as smoking cigarettes.

Wonderful photo. It is interesting to look at something in two cultures. In Saudi Arabia the water pipes are looked at for tobacco use and no one things the wiser. There are even cafes devoted to the hookah water pipe use. Sadly here in the States if one saw someone using a water pipe they would instantly think drug use.

The contrast is so funny. Here in the states a “hookah” store would be watched closely and soon closed for selling “drug” paraphenalia. Are they really smoking tobacco?

    Great capture Susie.

Hookah may be fun for some, but for others it is hokum!

    Nice photo, Susie!
