Thai Thai Restaurant

This is the entrance to a family restaurant in Jeddah called Thai Thai, which of course serves Thai cuisine. And right next door is another restaurant that serves Lebanese cuisine called Jeddah Jeddah. There are two separate entrances and dining areas for each restaurant – one is for single men only and the other is for families only. They are located in Jeddah on Sultan Street near History Circle at Heraa Street.

Why are there Chinese characters on Thai restaurant?

  3. DeSeRt RoSe says:

Have you tried their food? I was considering going to check it out 🙂

Why are singles and couples apart?

    • Ah, Brad! Saudi Arabia is a strict segregated society – segregated by sex. There is no mixing socially of men and women. Women cannot drive, are not allowed into sporting events (so they never see their sons scoring that winning goal), and most homes here even have separate entrances and salons for men and women guests. Likewise, most restaurants here have separate entrances and dining areas for families and single men. The only activity that men and women can do together in public here is shopping or picnicking along the Red Sea perhaps. And even at that, you must always carry proof with you that the female you are with is either your wife, daughter or sister, otherwise you will both be arrested for immoral behavior.
Bet you weren’t expecting all of that, huh?

Such funny names aren’t uncommon in the West, here in Newcastle for example there’s an Italian restaurant called EST EST which sits next to a Spanish one, which doesn’t have a repeated name unfortuantely enough. Your topic reminds me of them probably because theý’re all different authentic restaurants in a country that has nothing to do with the cuisine inside.

Interesting that both restaurants have repeated names twice. I know some Chinese restaurants do that for good luck (eg. I know of a Chinese fast food place called ‘Beijing Beijing’)…I wonder if these restaurants are named for the same reason?

Interesting, is it art or a sign I can’t read? I love Thai. Not something I’ll see nearby. Sometimes I make something at home. How was the food?

    • I think it is just art – pretty and eye catching, isn’t it? No, we haven’t eaten there yet, but it is on our list. We did eat next door at Jeddah Jeddah and the food was excellent.
