A whole tailor shop for thobes! So that’s why Saudi men always look so elegant in them. Thanks for the “inside” story.

  3. Gaelyn says:

Does the thobe button, zipper, velcro shut, or is it a pull over? At least they can add a little pazaz with the embroidery. Is that allowed on the women’s version?

    • The men’s thobes usually have buttons down the front to about the waist, so it does pull over the head. Sometimes there are snaps at the standup collar, since these are stiff and don’t accommodate buttons easily. Women’s abayas can be plain black, but most women here have ones that are decorated in a variety of ways, withbroidery, rhinestones, beads, lace, or multi-colored fabric trim.

Reminds of a clerical garment store.

Thanks for all the interesting details. They sure aren’t just any old robes!
