Shops at Night

DSCF4458 1 copy
This is just a typical scene of various shops at night here in Jeddah. Businesses are very well lit at night. Most businesses stay open pretty late because during the day shops must close during prayer times, which cuts into the daytime business hours. More women are out at night too – it’s just too hot during the day to be out in the heat covered in black from head to toe.

  1. We have gone into travel agencies and other offices much later than what you have said. Also during the week, we have been at shopping malls later than 11pm too.

Hi, I’ve lived in Jeddah all my life. The office hours here are like in any other country. From 0830-0900am to 0530-0600pm Its just that there are prayer breaks in the middle. It also differs from office to office. i.e. A ticketing office would be open from 0900-0100pm and then open from 0500-0800pm so there’s a break in the middle. At other places, its the usual. But most shopping malls open from 0500-1100pm at night. later on weekends.

Very nice shot and I know how problemtic night shooting can be.

    This leads to a question.

What are normal hours for life in Saudi Arabia?

For example for someone like me a normal workday is something like 8:30 am – 5:30 pm. I go to bed at 11:30pm or so and wake up somewhere around 6:30 am.

    • Many businesses stay open here until midnight or even later. Since they must be closed so much during the day for the five daily prayers, it really cuts into normal business hours. Many times, at 1am, I see entire families out shopping. I think most Saudis are on a later schedule than the West.

I like the blue tree-type thingy. It looks like exploding fireworks in the sky.

Hi!, I really love your photos. They are so Artistic. Can you teach me how to watermark my photos?

  6. Ugh... Me Human! says:

Who on earth told you to cover up in black anyway? Duh! Nobody minds it if a lady like you dresses up in pink or purple, or ‘flower power’…. you’ve been to the Al-Balad, right? Nigerian ladies do it all the time and they’re treated like elite… coming to think of it, Nigerian ladies are highly educated people- Even a cave man would tell you that.
