Old Jeddah at Night

Proving once again that this is indeed a man’s world here in Saudi Arabia, the ratio of men to women in this typical night scene in Al-Balad, the oldest section of Jeddah, is about ten men to one woman. Men are mostly dressed in white or in regular street clothes while women are the ones who are mostly dressed in black. In modern and sophisticated shopping malls, the men to women ratio is more even. This photo was taken on a week night and the place was bustling with activity. Everything is available for sale here in Al-Balad, from shoes and socks to meats and milk. Prices are very reasonable.

This reminds me very much of a familiar corner of a city in Morocco, although the “people scape” would be different, more women, and men wearing non-white.

  4. Thanks for taking us on a walk through the old town! Any rug shops there . . . could we stop inside?

It is interesting to see that at night many Saudi men seem to abandon the headgear (something thay might make sense during a hot sunny day), but women still must be covered like furniture in a vacant house.
