Space Age Mall

The malls here in Saudi Arabia are amazing, and they just keep building more and more and more. That’s because shopping is one of the few activities that families can do together in public here in this country, although some malls do not admit single males who are not accompanied by a female family member. This shot was taken inside the new Mall of Arabia of Jeddah. This area of the mall has a large open space to accommodate special events – here it has been filled up by temporary booths and decorations for Ramadan. The structure with the stairs has a large lounge area on top equipped with many large screen TVs and sofas. The lighting throughout the mall constantly changes colors, and even the parking garage below the mall is color coded with lighting to make it easy to find your car or to get picked up. The railing you see at the bottom of the photo overlooks the lower level of the malls where there are shops galore.

I find the colors a bit garish, but then I don’t do shopping malls if I can help it. Guess that leaves me out for Saudi.

Given the Saudi physical environment (dry, dusty, hot) and the complete lack on public entertainment facilities (at least how we know them in the West), it makes sense the the shopping malls are luxurious and a bit fantastic at the same time.

I wonder what the air conditioniong bills are like?
