Al-Balad Shopping District

The oldest part of Jeddah is home to some of the best shopping of the city. This is where the souks are and one can find bargains on just about everything from clothing to perfumes to gold jewelry, as well as electronics, incense, and medicinal herbs. The area is called Al-Balad, which in Arabic means the city. Many of the streets in this part of town are wide enough for only one car, since much of the area was built long before cars were invented. Al-Balad’s buildings are an interesting mix of old and new, ancient and modern. Enjoy some of my past posts on Al-Balad: Al-Balad Shops; Old Jeddah at Night; Shopkeeper in Old Jeddah; Sitting around Al-Balad; Electricity in Old Jeddah; Green Rawasheen; Old Souk; Al-Balad Architecture; Old Town Dwelling; Shadows.

  6. I love those walking through the shopping area photos! Did you have to be a little sneaky with your camera? I’d love to see a jewelry and/or gold shop, antique shop and rug shop (hint, hint)
