In a fog of red spray paint, this laborer works at one of hundreds of wrought iron companies in an industrial area of Jeddah. Saudi men do not hold blue collar positions in this country. The hard laborers come from poorer countries in the region like Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, Somalia, Yemen, and others. It is rare to see any of these workers using face masks or protective gear of any kind. Even the welders do not wear eye protection.
About This Blog, and About Me: Susie of Arabia
Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, is KSA's 2nd largest city and is located on its west coast, right on the Red Sea. I moved here in 2007 with my Saudi hubby. This journal reflects the things that I see here, life through my eyes, my lens.
Please be sure to also visit my other blog, SUSIE OF ARABIA (formerly SUSIE'S BIG ADVENTURE), which relates my experiences, thoughts, and observations about living in Saudi Arabia.

Even the welders?? How can that be?!
I don’t know, but I see it almost every day. It’s just hard to catch a good photo of it because I am always zooming by in a car…
The wellbeing of the foreign workforce is a serious issue but their human rights are also said to be violated I’m afraid.
That is so sad to hear that the workers are not using anything to protect their health. It makes me wonder if they are provided with the masks and just choose not to use them, or is nothing provided for them. I can’t imagine breathing in all of that spray paint.
