Drive-Thru Outdoor Market

There are many outdoor markets like this one here in Jeddah. Most of them carry a nice selection of fresh fruits and vegetables, eggs, and dates. The photo shows just part of this market. It is actually an “L” shaped market on a corner. Customers can drive in and get out of their cars to pick out their merchandise. But they don’t even have to get out their cars if they don’t want to. Assistants will fetch whatever the customer wants and bring it right to the vehicle. The prices are competitive with the large vegetable market and are generally cheaper than the big supermarkets.

Almost seems like the height of laziness not to get out of the car, unless not able and then is a great service. yet the market looks inviting to walk around.

Looks like a market of delicious fruits and vegetables! I wonder if it’s all “locally” grown and how “organic” fits into that picture!??

    • Leif – There is a lot of farming in the region. Taif is about an hour’s drive from Jeddah and many fruits and vegetables are grown there, as well as roses, which the city is known for. Lebanon, Syria, and other countries in the region also grow lots of produce. I’m not really sure about how much is grown organically though.

Waiting for your order in the car?? But isn’t the fun of the market in touching and selecting the food yourself?
    Such a colorful picture.

Same as here in Iran. I have some photos like yours from my last travel to Saudi Arabia!
    Thanks for sharing!
