CDP Theme Day: Statues

The first day of each month is City Daily Photo’s Theme Day. Click here to view thumbnails for all participants.
This month’s theme is statues, which doesn’t seem like such a difficult task – IF you live anywhere in the world except a strict Islamic country where statues are considered idolatry and are forbidden. Statues of people and animals are not permitted here, not in their entirety anyway. Body parts, or likenesses with missing parts, or abstract forms are allowed. Jeddah is a city filled with incredible public art, mostly in the form of sculptures, but finding a “statue” is next to impossible. So I have chosen this abstract sculpture of Birds in Flight as one of the closest things to a statue as I could find. I don’t have any information at all about this piece, but to me it is a very graceful and powerful image.
If you are interested in seeing how artists manage to skirt around the idolatry issue by using just body parts or incomplete animal forms, take a look at these previous posts featuring art of the City of Jeddah: The Supplication ; The Eye ; The Fist ; Big Fish ; Tall Camel Sculpture ; and Hungry Horses.

The lighting on this sculpture is gorgeous. It’s so interesting to learn about other customs and cultures. Thanks for searching so hard and sharing this beautiful sculpture. It reminds me of a freedom I take for granted.

  8. Dina says:

Beautiful birds. Your linked sculptures and explanations are fascinating.

Although I have never seen it spelled out, I suspect my city has the same sensitivities to “graven images” and therefore has almost no people statues.

  9. Hilda says:

Wow, what a restriction. I like these graceful birds and they look great against the blue sky.

  10. Glennis says:

Strange that they don’t allow proper statues. This one is very graceful and it does look very like birds in flight, but not quite. However I like it.
