Mall of Arabia Exterior

Mall of Arabia at night

The malls here in Saudi Arabia are absolutely amazing. Aside from being architectural feats, Saudi malls feature many high end designer shops and most are equipped with a large family entertainment area. There aren’t many activities that families can do together here because of the strict gender segregation in this society. On weekends, single men are usually not allowed into the malls unless they are accompanied by their family members. The Mall of Arabia, shown here, has well over 300 stores, many restaurants, separate prayer areas for men and women, fountains throughout, and an enormous entertainment area including an ice skating rink.

  1. Susie, re “On weekends, single men are usually not allowed into the malls unless they are accompanied by their family members” – is that a way to prevent immigrant workers (presumably single without families) to attend the malls?

    • That could be one of the reasons, Nathalie. Although I think their main goal is to prevent groups of youth from contacting girls, bothering families, or causing disturbances at the malls.
