Family Picnic

The Red Sea is a very dominant feature of the city of Jeddah. The city is spread out from north to south along the Red Sea coast and is not very wide at all, although there is tremendous growth and constant construction going on. This is a typical scene of a family enjoying the fresh air and a little picnic next to the sea. There are not that many public picnic facilities available, so this family utilizes a concrete bench and the sidewalk on the Corniche. Mom wears the black abaya and headscarf, while Dad wear the traditional white Saudi dress and cap. Kids wear whatever they want, usually Western looking attire. Many Saudi women spend very little time outdoors at all and get very minimal exposure to the sun.

Funny you used this bank. My husband always points out the ‘amusing’ shape of their emblem.. but maybe that’s just him!

In Kuwait, they have gone out of their way to provide shaded huts, benches, picnic spots etc. for families.

Hi Susie. I hear what you are saying, but I still can’t get used to the idea of having a picnic on concrete. But the sea is beautiful.
