Al-Balad Textiles

Al-Balad is what the oldest section of Jeddah is called. It is home to the old souks (markets) of the city and is a very popular place to shop because merchandise is very reasonably priced here. This shop sells textiles – brightly colored prayer rugs ranging greatly in size, color, design, and quality. All homes have several prayer rugs for families and visitors. Since Muslims pray five times daily and kneeling down and touching the forehead and hands to the floor is required during prayer, prayer rugs are used. Many people carry them with them if they know they are not going to be home for prayers, so their prayer rugs provide a clean surface to pray on.

I bought a silk prayer rug in Agra, India and its one of my favorite “souvenirs!” I’d love to look around that place in your photo – very interesting! Nice to catch up on your blog this evening!
