The old-style seating arrangements in Saudi Arabia consist of upholstered cushions which are placed on the floor and lined up along the walls and the center of the room is left completely open. Cushions are also placed standing up along the wall and oftentimes there are extra cushions (the red ones in this photo) to lean one’s elbow on.

If you have back problems these are actually great!! I used to love a soft, cushy couch…but now I want this because I have found that it is the ONLY thing that supports my back and doesn’t leave it hurting after a while.
Hi Nicole – My problem is that my legs and feet go to sleep after a while if I sit on this type of floor seating. I have to keep changing positions frequently and it feels awkward, especially if I am in a dress.
Hey, does that middle red cushion (The 3-d rectangle shaped one) have a name? I’ve been looking for them everywhere to try and get some.
Hi Erin – They are arm rests – and I’ve seen them everywhere. If you are in Jeddah, they are even in Hyper Panda. Or down in Al Balad or just about any textile place.
i am malaysian…and i really like this style… maybe i will use this concept for my future new house… but couldn’t find it in malaysia… :-\
A lot of Saudis (mostly badoo/Bedouin Saudis) will have a similar seatings in their living rooms, and you’ll will always see this style in tints but with more colors especially red. So this isn’t an old-style seating or majlis.
I honestly don’t like the look of it nor the comfort of sitting on the hard, not so comfortable, edgy cushions! I like my living room to include a nice cushy sofa, with the coffee table in front of (or next to) me, and a big flat screen TV mounted on the wall. 😉
In Jeddah, where I live (currently in the US), you won’t find this in native Jeddawi households!
Hi Sari – Thanks for your input. My sister-in-law actually has a cushy red set for her pool area at her estraha. The set in this photo actually belong to my mother-in-law, who has lived in Jeddah all her life. She got it as a wedding gift 60 years ago and she still uses it!
It’s the Persian rug that caught my attention immediately! Looks like quite the place to lounge with friends!
