Our World: Rooftop Pigeon Roost

Amidst the many satellite dishes and large water tanks, there are many interesting things I can see from my perch atop our apartment building in Jeddah. About a block away, I can see this rooftop pigeon roost.

I don’t know whether these pigeons are being bred for eating, for messaging, or just for a hobby – and so far I haven’t managed to observe their caretaker.

Seems smart to allow for the possibility of future building.

Is so much TV watched? I suppose a lot of women have a Lot of time on their hands.

been trying to catch up with your posts. when i was in bangladesh a few years ago, i noticed the same thing about buildings there. it appears that they allot room for growth later on. i thought that was weird at first but i saw that was the norm around there.

are there lower middle class/poorer sector of the population that are not migrant workers?

    • I would say that most Saudis are at least middle to upper class, but there is a segment of the population of Saudis that is definitely poor too – What percentage I can’t begin to tell you though.

Now that is interesting. A mystery. Here in Oklahoma we don’t have too many pigeon coops. We do have lots of fighting chickens though.

I’m amazed at all the satellite dishes.

The engineer in me notices that the pillars supporting the roof of the coop have rebar sticking out like at one point the owner wanted to make the building taller.

    • Yogi – Good eye! Many many buildings here have rebar sticking out like that. And I believe you’re right – that it is in hopes of adding on in the future. Sometimes the owner cannot afford to build all the floors he wants on the building at once, so they leave the rebar like that for a few years down the road when hopefully he can afford the add-on. And the satellite dishes – they are everywhere! Even the most rundown crumbling dwellings here are not without satellite dishes.
