Thobe Shop

Thobes are the long, usually white dresses that are the traditional garb for men in Saudi Arabia. Most thobe shops here in Jeddah are small businesses where one can have a thobe custom tailored to fit. The walls of the shop are usually lined with bolts of white or cream colored bolts of fabric. Measurements are taken. A style is chosen, along with details such as custom embroidery, snaps, buttons, or zippers, etc. This is a new thobe shop and it is the biggest one I have ever seen. It carries ready-to-wear thobes in a wide variety of styles, colors, sizes, and fabrics. Prices start at 80 riyals (about $20 US) and up for a ready-made thobe. The shop also sells men’s headgear and the dressy loose outer robes (called bisht) that are worn over the thobes on special occasions such as weddings.

what is the name of the shop and locations

    • I forget the name of the shop, but it is on the west side of King Fahd Road, a few blocks south of the Mall of Arabia, at the southern end of a huge strip mall with big rounded glass architectural sections.

      • Hi San – We just drove by there today – the name of the shop is Al-Shiaka Showrooms, and they have a huge 70% off SALE sign in the window now!!!

I love men’s thobes. My husband has one which he rarely gets to wear here in Toronto. Unless there’s a Nikah in Summer!!

  7. Gaelyn says:

Things are looking up when you can buy a pre-sized thobe for $20. Is that a better price than custom?

    • Gaelyn – Hubby says that a non-fancy custom made thobe usually runs about 90-100 riyals, so the difference is not that much more. Of course it goes up from there if you choose a more expensive fabric and add all the bells and whistles.
