Thobes are the long, usually white dresses that are the traditional garb for men in Saudi Arabia. Most thobe shops here in Jeddah are small businesses where one can have a thobe custom tailored to fit. The walls of the shop are usually lined with bolts of white or cream colored bolts of fabric. Measurements are taken. A style is chosen, along with details such as custom embroidery, snaps, buttons, or zippers, etc. This is a new thobe shop and it is the biggest one I have ever seen. It carries ready-to-wear thobes in a wide variety of styles, colors, sizes, and fabrics. Prices start at 80 riyals (about $20 US) and up for a ready-made thobe. The shop also sells men’s headgear and the dressy loose outer robes (called bisht) that are worn over the thobes on special occasions such as weddings.
About This Blog, and About Me: Susie of Arabia
Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, is KSA's 2nd largest city and is located on its west coast, right on the Red Sea. I moved here in 2007 with my Saudi hubby. This journal reflects the things that I see here, life through my eyes, my lens.
Please be sure to also visit my other blog, SUSIE OF ARABIA (formerly SUSIE'S BIG ADVENTURE), which relates my experiences, thoughts, and observations about living in Saudi Arabia.
