Up in a Flash

A year ago, none of these buildings were here. It used to be an area comprised of all vacant lots for blocks and blocks. This whole area in northeast Jeddah has experienced a super rate of growth and development and it seems the buildings have sprung up literally overnight. All of these buildings are multi-story apartment buildings. The construction industry is still booming here in Jeddah and doesn’t appear to be slowing down any time soon.

Susie, is this area near to King Abdul-aziz’s university?

    • It could be almost anywhere in Jeddah – the boundaries are really pushing outwards. This is actually in northwest Jeddah. KAU is much further south, but I drove out there today and there is a lot of new similar construction. Jeddah is starting to push west and north quite a bit. I don’t make it down south very often, so I can’t speak for that area, but I wouldn’t doubt if it is growing down there too.

  2. It’s amazing how fast a city can grow. I hope the construction was done well!

Where are all the people coming from that will live in these apartments?

    • Like the theme song from The Jeffersons, many of these people are “moving on up” to newer, larger digs. The construction pace here in Jeddah has been at a wild fervor since my arrival here 4 years ago and doesn’t appear to have any indication of slowing down any time soon. Jeddah runs for many miles north and south along the Red Sea which is to the west, but the city is really not very wide at all. Getting from the airport which is north to a residence in the south part of Jeddah must take at least 2 hours if traffic is bad.
