This is something you thought you might not ever see – a veiled Saudi woman clad in her black abaya fishing with her children. I snapped this photo in the late afternoon in a busy area of Jeddah’s Corniche, the coastal area along the Red Sea that extends for miles and miles. This particular area has many beautiful sculptures that I was there photographing when I happened to look over and see this woman and her kids. I think it embodies the amazing spirit, strength, and determination of Saudi women. I am so happy I was able to capture this rare scene and share it with you.
About This Blog, and About Me: Susie of Arabia
Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, is KSA's 2nd largest city and is located on its west coast, right on the Red Sea. I moved here in 2007 with my Saudi hubby. This journal reflects the things that I see here, life through my eyes, my lens.
Please be sure to also visit my other blog, SUSIE OF ARABIA (formerly SUSIE'S BIG ADVENTURE), which relates my experiences, thoughts, and observations about living in Saudi Arabia.

This is one of my favorites of all your images. In fact, it is my favorite.
Thanks, Judy and Wildstorm – I have to agree. This is a very special photo. I don’t get to capture something like this every day.
This is such a touching image!
Good for her! This photo is really great, a ray of hope.
Who knows what advancements the new year may bring.
Dina – If we don’t have hope, we don’t have much at all. Thanks!
Now that is a determined angler! Nice shot.
Thanks, Jerry. I feel so lucky to have gotten this shot. It’s not a sight that is seen every day here.
A woman gotta live too 🙂
I really feel sorry for women who can’t do anything they desire just because they are women and because its in our culture not do this and that. A woman is free to do whatever she likes and she should be given the chance to breath more, hence enjoy life like any other normal person. 🙂
Sari – I couldn’t agree more! Thanks!
